temperatures, which also seems to like a mix with a higher percentage
of organic matter. I purchased mine as a seedling just more than three
years ago and have been slowly encouraging the annual growth carefully
until it finally matured to produce its first inflorescence recently. It
grows slowly compared to some of the other Habenaria species,
but it also seems to not go completely dormant if kept slightly moist.
This worked in my favour because I could keep an eye on its development
continuously while small, and I assumed that having at least a few green
leaves would facilitate a slow but continuous supply of starch to
increase tuber growth and size. It is a late summer/early autumn
bloomer, beginning just after H. dentata has finished and towards the end of both H. regnieri and H. roebelenii.

<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; I purchased this one as a seedling almost 5 years ago. It was very small when purchased and I doubted that it would survive. However, it slowly grew to flowering size and then quite suddenly had a burst of growth, throwing out twin spikes quite surprisingly. I had kept this species before, several years ago, but that was the pink variety. I had always been a little skeptical of the blue colouration of this variety, given that most 'blues' are actually purple, but this one is pretty close to true blue. Fragrance is subtle. It is most pleasing. I am also cultivating a large compot of Vanda coerulea seedlings that I deflasked in August. Perhaps in another five years or so I will get to report on their first blue flowers too.

Rhynchostylis coelestis 'Blue' 30 Dec 21

Rhynchostylis coelestis 'Blue' 30 Dec 21

Dr David Vaughanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03592820081547544440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2884430397145713702.post-17629049705202447462021-11-27T22:32:00.012+10:002021-11-27T22:40:12.661+10:00Cymbidium aloifolium just gets better each year... and some.
This year has been particularly wet and very humid in our part of Queensland. We are in an official La NiƱa which means moist and humid conditions with higher than usualy rainfall and storms. I call this 'orchid weather' because the plants just seem to grow like weeds with all the rain and high huimidity. Unfortunately, it also brings along more bugs and this spring I have already had to remove a number of Dendrobium beetles and today also sprayed my two large Myrmecophila tibicinis plants that had larvae on them (these plants just finished blooming). Fortunately I caught the beetles early.

Gracing the stage currently is my Cymbidium aloifolium that is a real performer each year and just gets bigger and better. Thirteen spikes currently and the plant has been moved to a stand because it is just too heavy to hang anywhere now. It must weight close to 20 kg. Those Dendrobium beetles love to munch on the blooms, so I have sprayed those too. So far so good.

I have also had some very welcome success growing and flowering my Cymbidium suave. This plant was purchased as tube stock in a 14 cm tube in June 2020. It has grown incredibly for me and continues to shoot out new growth non-stop. It has also flowered for the first time this year, sending out three current spikes with another three developing. The flowers are fragrant of spice during the mornings. When the plant first arrived in the post, it was potted in soil of all things! I quickly removed all the soil and over-potted it up in a deep waste paper bin drilled with extra drainage. This worked really well and it has quickly grown to a large size in this container.

Another good looker is Eulophia guineensis which has wonderfully long-lasting flowers. Mine has been in full bloom now for over a month and is still looking good. I had to stake the inflorescence though, which is tall and erect, but the weight of the flowers is too much to hold up when it rains.

Then, a hybrid that is growing on me (excuse the pun) is Bealara Big Shot 'Hilo Sparkle' that I got as part of the deal when I purchased my greenhouse. Of the many plants that came with the greenhouse in very poor condition, this one perked up quickly after I repotted it and treated it for bugs. It has rewarded me with three large spikes, one of which has just begun opening its blooms. Flowers are pleasantly large and fragrant.

I hope the humidity lasts for a little while longer - just enough to get the growing done for the majority of my plants this season!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The Dendrobium crumenatum is barely open for a day, so I photographed it while watering this morning. The Eulophia guineensis is a first flowering for me and the plants has grown rapidly over the last year. It seems to do better in a deep pot with pseudobulbs well mulched.

The Laelia gouldiana hybrid has an incredible fragrance of roses in the morning. The fragrance is very strong, just like a rose too, but it fades during the afternoon and is barely detectable by late afternoon. The blooms are also spectacular. It is a pity that I purchased this one without its grex name. Oh well.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsjsi80nWxb7W8OYJCEraIgZ5WJkCcoBYP0ZuHgsCjoCPjkU1kFqrI2_oIXHmT7WKIYLYJrd9g_Q84tELLd-qOjNsBu7D2q6wyCEyd47ZYP1-Vo2Ynzymb1WRb3efW6cEiW4ALyR5Ko-E/s2048/Dendrobium+Candy+Cane+23+Oct+21.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; The flowers actually have a subtle and interestingly spicy fragrance - not quite expected. It grows well here in Queensland and mine is growing on a trellis against a South-facing wall. Length of vine seems to be the thing that is important for flowering, not necessarily age of the plant.
My Dendrobium anosmum, D. aphylum and D. lodigesii are all in flower now and look good. The D. lodigesii is due for a good re-pot after flowering and a bit of a tidy up. The Phaius australis recently finished blooming with two tall spikes, the larger reaching almost 2m tall. I have since chopped these up to see if I can develop some growth from the nodes on the stems. I was also pleasantly surprised with my Cymbidium madidum that flowered very well this season. I spent much time watching the native stingless bees pollinating each flower after they had opened. These bees are the native pollinators of this species and systematically pollinated all of the flowers on four long spikes of flowers. The bees are very small and seem to really struggle when the pollinia are attached to their thorax after reversing out of a flower - some try to remove the pollinia with their legs while others simply give up flying between flowers and just crawl to the next one - they seem to have a raw deal. I often wondered what their reward was, since the flowers don't actually produce much nectar inside at all. After watching these bees I noticed that they collect the honeydew, which is high in sugars (and is very sweet), that often accumulates in thick blobs behind the flowers, near the ovary. So, it must be worth it then.

Two of my three plants are flowering and seem to be doing just fine in the Rockhampton climate. It is interesting how you never quite forget a frangrance though. I instantly recognised the fragrance of these flowers when I went outside to photograph them just after dusk. These flowers are just incredible.

I have since also pollenated several blooms to hopefully get some babies into circulation. I also have an idea to incorporate a large display colony into a large half-globe pot for myself if I get enough babies.

Bonatea speciosa July 2021

Dr David Vaughanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03592820081547544440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2884430397145713702.post-34461200858049190722021-02-07T11:47:00.002+10:002021-02-07T11:47:19.481+10:00Habenaria dentata in bloom
My Habenaria dentata finally bloomed! I have been watching the stem grow taller and taller, just beyond 60cm, for about two months now. I still don't have this one down to a tee yet as it seems that the nectar produced in the long spurs of the flower have a tendency to glue the petals closed, preventing opening in some blooms. I am not quite sure why this might be, but a careful squeeze of the tips of those buds seems to do the trick and they spring open and unfurl normally.

Habenaria dentata November 2020

Habenaria dentata January 2021

Habenaria dentata flowers 6 February 2021

Dr David Vaughanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03592820081547544440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2884430397145713702.post-82548625171805916622020-11-24T11:13:00.004+10:002020-11-24T11:13:42.354+10:00Nervilia aragoana first flowering
I have been impatiently waiting for any signs of life from my various Nervilia species since September. So far, only my Nervilia aragoana has woken up, sending up a beautiful inflorescence recently, with what looks like three more shoots just beginning to emerge from the potting mix. This Nervilia sends up its inflorescence first, before its leaves. The flowers are a beautiful green and white, are small, but quite pleasantly fragrant. The flowers are also sensitive to changing light intensity and close up progressively as light decreases during the latter part of the day. According to the Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia, Nervilia aragoana is quite widespread through Asia, and is also native to Queensland, Australia and also New Caledonia.

I managed to get a few photos of the inflorescence emerging, demonstrating the speed of its growth over a few days, as well as photos of the complete inflorescence and individual flowers.
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; At the beginning of the year I started putting out my feelers, looking for anyone in Australia who might have some Boantea speciosa plants that they might consider parting with. I found such a person and made a new orchid friend in the process. I waited for several months before finally receiving a beautiful plant that had several tubers. The tubers that were seperate from the main plant I potted up separately. I lost one, but the remaining three are doing well and adjusting to my local conditons.

Bonatea speciosa

In a seperate interesting event, my Spiranthes odorata set seeds after flowering earlier in the year and I put it aside to dry out a little before repotting. I put it next to a large pot of vegetables and seeds must have blown into that pot. In the next three months I has several Spiranthese odorata seedlings popping up in that pot, under the vegetables. The potting mix that I had used for the vegetables must have contained a mycorrhyia that was compatible as a symbiont for germinating the seeds. I have since moved these seedlings into their own comminuty pot and they are growing rapidly.

Spiranthes odorata seedlings

Dr David Vaughanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03592820081547544440noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2884430397145713702.post-78814301454369233402020-09-18T20:21:00.004+10:002020-11-08T14:11:24.035+10:00Some interesting terrestrials currently in bloom
I was very fortunate to get some South African and other terrestrial species late last year and earlier this year while they were still dormant. The South African ones (Satyrium odorum and Pterygodium catholicum are both native to Hermanus where I used to live, and seeing them bloom here in central Queensland is both an honour and a reminder of that beautiful place in the southwestern Cape. I have also been very fortunate to locate some Bonatea speciosa here (another Hermanus native) - specific plant stock which is stooped in botanical history regarding a particular well-known nurseryman who passed away and who had brought the same limited stock plants in from the USA many years ago. That is part of the interest I have with many orchids - the history, which I try to keep recorded for all my plants, if known. Another good example is a recent gift of Cynorkis guttata from a personal collection in Sydney which has been in continuous culture for 30 years in that collection.

I have included a few photos here of some interesting terrestrials that are currently in bloom, including the Satyrium odorum, Pterygodium catholicum, an Australian native, Chiloglottis af. truncata, and a European native, Serapias lingua. I have a few more beginning to bloom now too and will update this post with additional photos as I take additional ones.
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; The plant has a specific tag number that is a requirement of the local government for traceability and to demonstrate that it was sourced through legal means. It is an endangered species found from northern Queensland through to northern New South Wales. This and other related orchids can be cloned relatively easily by cutting the flower stem after blooming and potting up the pieces of stem, which contain a single viable node. It is that node that generates a new plant identical to the parent plant.

There remains some debate whether this is a valid species, or if it is simply P. tankervilleae or a variant of the latter. I have been doing some reading on the subject and also getting some interesting opinions from various growers too. Some people consider some slight differences in the way the lip covers all, part or none of the column as diagnostic. However, a recent molecular study done on populations of P. australis in Australia made no mention of any overlap in the sequences generated from P. australis and those available for P. tankervilleae from southeast Asia. This paper did mention explicitly that the distribution of P. tankervilleae extends as far as Papua New Guinea (PNG) and that there was likely continuity in ancestral plants during the last period when a land bridge existed between PNG and Australia and possibly other locations north of PNG too (last Ice Age). This would suggest that if it is a separate species, that it may be a recent divergence from P. tankervilleae. Regardless however, this species is very special and in need of careful conservation in its remaining populations and habitat.

I have attached two photos here below: one of my plant from September last year when I purchased it, and a photo from todays date, about 11 months later after the plant matured into a large specimen producing its first spike of about 1.2 m tall. The first of my Pterostylis species, P. robusta, opened its first flower today. This one I obtained as a member of the Australian Native Orchid Society (Victoria group), which operates a tuber bank for members. I was curious to see if this and other species would grow and flower with such a mild winter here in Queensland. So far, almost all species I have emerged in June and July, and many are multiplying notably, but not all will bloom. I suspect some are too young to bloom (small tubers), so maybe next year I will have more species in flower.

Recently, after a bit of a cold snap here in Rockhampton, more of my winter-growing terrestrials have been emerging from their summer rest. I joined the Australian Native Orchid Society (Victoria division) when I moved here in 2019. They have an active tuber bank and I decided to try a few of the easier species on their list of available species. So far almost all of the species I obtained have emerged, with a few exceptions. I have added a few photos of some of these below, some of which are South African species. I have also added a few photos of some plants that recently bloomed, or are just beginning to bloom, or are getting ready to bloom. Of these I am very proud of the Phaius australis which will be a first time bloomer this year.

My Habenaria rhodocheila finally opened its last flower so I could take a shot of it in full glory. This one has done well for me in Rockhampton and I am looking forward to seeing how large the new tuber growth is once it goes dormant. Recently I picked up a small but flowering size Cymbidium dayanum alba on ebay. It came in the post with buds on and one of its flowers has since opened. Spike length is what I would expect from a young first bloomer - short and awkward, but given a few more years I am sure it will produce much nicer, longer and arching spikes of many many flowers each.

A few months back my wife came home from a garage sale with a single Dendrobium cane, handed it to me and said she thinks it's an orchid... I stuck it to a bottlebrush tree wood mount with some sphagnum moss and left it to do its own thing. A couple of weeks later it shot out a new growth which rocketed to about 50 cm. Recently this Dendrobium sent out a beautiful display of pink blooms. I have no idea what the hybrid is, but it is quite showy.

In addition, I am currently awaiting the first blooms from my Habenaria regnieri. I plan to cross this primary hybrid with Habenaria medusa to introduce some interesting lip detail (hopefully). I will update the photo below with one for the opened bloom before I pollinate it.

When I arrived in Rockhampton last year I noticed that the weather here was very similar in most respects to Townsville, just without the evening breeze sometimes during Summer - so things here in Summer have certainly been hot and humid! As part of my move here I decided to get back to some of the terrestrials that I had certainly had fun with previously over the years. I started collecting various species including Nervilia species, and a handful of Australian natives, and Habenaria species too. The latter are a bit tricky to find in cultivation, but I have a few now in the collection doing well, one of which is H. medusa. This species I managed to kill when I first attempted growing it back in South Africa a few years ago. In retrospect the conditions were just too cool, and humidity too low. I was understandably nervous when I got one last year, but it grew like a weed without much prompting at all. It is just coming into bloom now with nine buds beginning to open sequentially, and on my son's birthday! I will update some images below as the flowers progress through the week.

The other habenarias are also showing signs of growth and getting ready to bloom. I was surprised this morning to find my Habenaria dentata sprouting new multiple growth from an exposed root on the surface of the potting media. Habenaria rhodocheila should flower in the next few weeks, and Habenaria regnieri a little thereafter (see below).
I also managed to get some Nervilia peltata plants from Ian at Burleigh Park Orchids in Townsville. These are tiny little chaps native to northeastern Queensland (see additional info here). They were only described in 1994, and are probably quite scarce in cultivation. I hope they do as well as my other Nervilia species.
The move from Townsville to Rockhampton at the end of 2019 was disruptive for my plants, and many of them resented the relocation by road. Some of my fussier species were knocked back during active growth by at least a year or even more from the move. As a result I decided to focus on some new terrestrials (geophytes), and purchased a variety of Australian native species including Nervilia species and some others. The Nervilia species were purchased from Ian Walters at Burleigh Park Orchids in Townsville and arrived as tubers via express post. However, I quickly realised that 'express' is not quite express when the destination is outside of the main shipping centres in Australia! They took three days to arrive and the other postage occupants, two Habenaria species (H. rhodocheila and H. medusa) were very stressed on arrival. After two days of TLC and a treatment with dilute Seasol, both Habenaria species responded well and made a full recovery and are currently growing steadily. The Nervilia species (N. aragoana and N. plicata) are growing rapidly, and their foliage is unique and impressive. It is certainly worth growing these for their foliage alone.

Later this week I am expecting a shipment of Corybas, Diuris, Pterostylis, Thelymitra, and Pterygodium, Satyrium and Serapias species. The first four are native Australian species, while the Pterygodium and Satyrium are South African, and the Serapias are European. All of these originate from culture, from Nesbitt's Orchids. I have also joined the Australian Native Orchid Society (Victoria) to learn more about the Australian native terrestrial species and to connect with some like-minded people. This summer I also hope to flower my young Phaius australis for the first time, which is growing like a weed, and my Geodorum densiflorum which woke up recently from a 6-months sleep. I expect that the habenarias will probably only flower next year or maybe towards the end of this new year. I am still actively on the hunt for additional Habenaria species and of course Bonatea speciosa.

As I relocate to Rockhampton from Townsville, I have had to rely on photographs of some of my flowering orchids from my wife. At the end of November I will be moving the whole family down, as well as the remaining plants, so it is better that they get flowering done beforehand.

My wife took these below photos of my flowering Cymbidium aloifolium, which seems to increase its number of flowers annually per spike, Dendrobium lindleyi and Dendrobium fimbriatum, which both waited until I had left before opening those buds!

I have had great success this year with my Phalaenopsis, although my wife comments that I have far too many white ones! I am actually not sure how I ended up with mainly white ones, but they may have been gifts along the way. They grow like weeds here in Townsville. The images below are of three standard show sizes from largest to miniature, with the flower span of the large one about 13 cm across. There are 28 open blooms, and 6 remaining buds to open on 3 spikes on the single large plant. The flowers are so heavy that I have had to place its pot inside a larger pot with an additional kilogram of stones in it to prevent it from falling over. This one will be entered into a future show, likely 2020.

Today I also had my first blooms open on my little Dendrobium aphyllum. I was surprised that this is actually a native species to northern Queensland, and it certainly is growing well outside just hanging under the pergola. The flower is faintly scented, similarly to that of D. tortile. The rest of my dendrobiums are all waking up nicely now, and I have already begun flooding them, especially my D. fimbriatum and D. lindleyi, both of which have multiple nodes shooting flower buds. My D. anosmum has finished flowering now but is growing new growth rapidly. On Friday this week I will pop round to a friend who is almost ready to split up his D. canaliculatum. I don't have this Queensland native yet, and the flowers look amazing (see here).

I have been waiting for my Dendrobium anosmum to flower since it pushed out tiny buds back in July. I have been patiently waiting while watching the buds develop to full size. I have two of these; the other is about a month behind the first one. The flowers are fragrant, not overpowering, but pleasantly fragrant of raspberries or a similar fruit. I have been wanting to flower one of these for about 8 years now. I initially began growing my own from seed back in 2011 and 2012, but never got the opportunity to raise my seedlings to flowering size before leaving South Africa. This species seems to do quite well here in Townsville (dry tropics), as do many of the Dendrobium species. My larger plant has canes of about 70-80 cm long, and is currently also pushing out new growth.

Over the last two days I have been photographing the progress of my Dendrobium tortile buds as they begin to open. I took several images over a few hours and selected the best to demonstrate the opening of the buds. I have some really nice looking Dendrobium anosmum also waiting to open their large swollen buds soon too. This species though is a real hurry-up-and-wait! It certainly takes its time to produce the buds and to grow them to flowering size - I have been waiting for ages, and I am getting impatient. I am sure though that the wait will eventually be worth it, and I look forward to posting images of its blooms too in the near future.

Today I went to the Townsville Orchid Society spring show to have a look at some of the spectacular plants in bloom, and to hopefully pick a few up for myself that were on sale. The show is being held from Friday 6th September to Sunday 8th September at the society's hall on Charles Street.

Apart from the usual suspects, there were some really interesting species and hybrids displayed which caught my eye (and nose). One in particular, Cymbidium canaliculatum var. Sparkesii was just incredible to view. The plant was super healthy and bold, with flowers just beginning to open (see some pics below). This is certainly a species that I would eventually like to get for my growing collection in future! There were also some awesome (near perfect) Phaius tankervilleae specimens, one of which had blooms up to nearly my height.

There were some good plants on offer too. Many good seedlings were available for some species that are quite unusual - I managed to get an advanced seedling of Robiquetia cerina, and also the primary hybrid Psychopsis mariposa alba. I also picked up (nearly missed) a tiny Dockrillia cucumerina mounted on a tiny piece of cork bark, a healthy Dendrobium tortile, and D. aphyllum. I was disappointed however, that there were two separate vendors selling plants that were clearly diseased with Phyllosticta fungus, which is easily spread between plants, and should never have been allowed anywhere near the exhibited plants of members, let alone at an orchid show! I was also surprised that several species names listed on exhibition plants were misspelled.

I have attached some pics below:

I have been spending much time lately simply taking in the incredible fragrance of my flowering Rhynchostylis gigantea. The neighbours must think I am weird when I perch myself on the ladder with my head in the blooms! I recently added R. gigantea 'spots' and R. gigantea 'Red' to my collection, although the missus insists that the latter is not red at all... I am still looking for the peach or orange variety.
While enjoying the rhynchos, I decided to play with some photograph to see how different the flowers might look with ultraviolet photography versus normal light spectrum photography. So, I took a picture of R. gigantea 'spots' with my Olympus stylus TG 860 tough (normal photography; Fig A, and then with my Nikon D3300 18-55 modified to ultraviolet only (UV photography; Fig B, converted to greyscale). It is interesting to note that the blooms reflect UV uniformly, and not differentially between pigments. In other words, the 'spots' don't seem to have any visual significance in the UV spectrum at all.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the flowering of some of my plants this year, and some of the growth put on in the last two. My Papilionanthe Amy literally went from a plant of about 40 cm long in October 2016 to just over 2 m tall today, having firmly cemented itself to a wooden pillar holding up the pergola. It flowered for the first time too, but beyond the height of the roof of the pergola which made it really interesting to photograph. I think the neighbours think I am crazy.

Papilionanthe Amy is a primary hybrid between P. hookeriana (see link here) and P. tricuspidata, (see link here) originally made in 1940. It has quite unusual flowers.

Other plants in flower include Myrmecophila tibicinis, and Cymbidium aloifolium. I was hoping I might get some Coelogyne parishii blooms this year, but all I got was foliage. A note on M. tibicinis - it has a very unique fragrance, almost a spicy mixed with a sweet smell which it seems to be able to switch on very rapidly indeed immediately after watering in the morning.
